Farming with Wildlife

We had another excellent talk last week entitled ‘Farming with Wildlife’.  The speaker, Andrew Parsons, farms 180 acres of arable and pastoral land at Acorn Farm, Sutton on Trent.  It was a very interesting talk and many people commented upon the high quality of Andrew’s photographs.

We have arranged to visit the farm on Friday 27th June as a follow up to the talk.  We will meet at the farm for a 7pm start, or 6.30 at Lowdham Village Hall, to share transport.

Cambridge Coach Trip

Last Sunday was our ‘Winter Gardens’ coach trip to Cambridge Botanic Gardens and Anglesey Abbey.  It was a very popular trip and we had a coach full!  The weather was fabulous, blue skies and sunshine,  which allowed us to see both gardens at their best. I am confident that everyone agreed, both gardens were well worth a visit.   We had chance to see winter bulbs and shrubs at their peak and brought home lots of ideas for our own gardens.  We plan to visit Cambridge Botanic gardens again next summer.

Thank you to everyone who came along.

The Twilight Garden

Our next talk is on Thursday 27th February, 7.30pm at the W.I. Hall in Lowdham.

It is entitled ‘The Twilight Garden’ and will explore the use of light to enhance your garden throughout the seasons.  The speaker Gail Summerfield, trained as a botanist, was a part-time lecturer and now runs a small retail nursery ‘Westshores’ in Lincolnshire along with her husband.  (www.westshores.co.uk)

All are welcome.  There is a small charge for non-members of the society.

A Week To Go For The Summer Show!

People with entries, setting them up in the marquee

Hello everyone. Not that you will probably need reminding, but there is only a week to go until this year’s Summer Show! The weather seems to be behaving itself, so let’s all keep our fingers crossed for a lovely warm Bank Holiday Monday.

There is still plenty of time to prepare your entries – growing, baking, photography, handicrafts or to get the children and grandchildren organised for the young people’s classes. Copies of the schedule are available in shops in the village or it can be downloaded here (and entry form here).

The Summer Show is the beginning of our membership year and this year we have worked really hard to plan an interesting and extensive programme of talks, visits and events. The first being a coach trip to Waddesdon House and Gardens on Sunday 15th September. I am sure all our members will agree at £10 a year, membership is excellent value for money.

We have a range of entertainment planned for this year’s show (details here), including The Dako Flying Angels, Carlton Brass Band, a hog roast and pony rides. It is a great day out for all the family starting at 1pm and finishing with the duck race and auction from 4pm! Hope to see you all there.
